6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us before the evening's performance of "Dutchman" by Amiri Baraka for this celebration of the contributions of Black Poets who have enhanced and enriched the lives of individuals, families, communities, and our entire nation.

National Black Poetry Day is in honor of Jupiter Hammon, the first African-American to publish poetry in the United States. In honor of Hammon's birth (October 17, 1711), we celebrate the contributions of all African-Americans to the world of poetry during an engaging reception and tribute to the Valley’s Black poets as well as Amiri Baraka, poet and writer of the play Dutchman, which is being presented by Tempe Center for the Arts October 4-19, 2019.
