The Bridge Initiative is an Arizona nonprofit working to identify and empower female artists in the Southwest region, with the aim of gender parity across all theatrical disciplines. The mission also includes bridging the gap between academia and the professional world, encouraging students to envision a clearer path to becoming lifelong artists.

THE BECHDEL TEST FEST 2.0

The Bridge Initiative: Women in Theatre presents The Bechdel Test Fest 2.0! This weekend festival explores the Bechdel Test: two women, who speak to each other, about something other than a man. Characters range from an African-American female ex-sherriff to girls in a group home to a Waiting for Godot-like Adam & Eve. Audition workshop on Sunday led by top Valley directors. Each block of programming features a talkback, including several playwrights.

7:30 – Short film Cafe Abundance; full-length play The Tragic Ecstasy of Girlhood by Kira Rockwell (national winner)
Saturday, April 27
4:00 – short films: Apricot, June in January, and Scattered (Bridge Bechdel Honorable Mention);
short plays: Lilies from Iron by Alison Campbell & Ann Marie Wilding, Is it Cold in Here? by Julie Weinberg
7:00 – short film A Land Shaped by Women (Bridge Bechdel Honorable Mention); full-length play An Ocean of Bees by Susan Hansell (Arizona winner)
Sunday, April 28
12:00 – Workshop: “Sides/Callbacks”
2:00 – short film Mother’s Way (Bridge Bechdel Grand Prize); full-length play The Way North by Tira Palmquist (national runner-up)
4:00 – Awards ceremony (FREE, including new AUDIENCE AWARDS to be voted on throughout the festival)
